AMERICAN IDOL
Idol: Rockers Allison Iraheta & Adam Lambert Rule the Night
February 26, 2009
It took almost an hour on Wednesday’s Idol before the judges finally found a singer they really, really wanted to see put through to the top 12. Allison Iraheta, who tended to squirm and mug like the 16-year-old kid she is during her interview with Ryan, sang Heart’s “Alone” with an unflagging and very mature strength. “She blew it out the box,” Randy said over and over. “You don’t even know how good you are,” Kara told her.
The other likely finalists seemed obvious — which probably means nothing.
There was a second eruption of hysteria when Adam Lambert, 27, closed the night with his almost terrifyingly slick run-through of “Satisfaction.” Paula, who has suppressed some of her dipsy-doodle charm this season, said he’d left behind American Idol and taken the nation to his own special Adam Lambert concert. Like a magic carpet ride! Randy compared him to Twilight cupcake Robert Pattinson and thirty or forty other celebrities. Simon, the realist, said the performance was both brilliant and excruciating but didn’t doubt that Adam would advance.
Simon also gave his endorsement to Megan Joy Corkrey, 23, even though he thought her version of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On” dribbled away. But she’s photogenic, pretty, and her voice is distinctive — almost a literal warble. With the right song, Kara predicted, “You could be a breakout artist.”
Jesse Langseth, 25, and Mishavonna Henson, 18, each have voices almost as striking as Megan’s, but Simon dismissed Langseth’s “Bette Davis Eyes” as “too cool for school,” and Randy thought Mishavonna needed to “shake it out” and sound younger.
Matt Breitzke, 28, is already probably a goner — Michael Sarver nabbed the “burly American man” spot last week — and Kai Kalama, 26, sang a rather stale “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.”
A possible squeaker: Kris Allen, 23, may have messed up Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” but somehow he held onto his boyish appeal. Simon: “I think the chicks are gonna love you.”
Surely this will have been the last we’ll see of the bizarre Nick Mitchell/Norman Gentle, 27, the world’s only performer to combine Sanjaya and Streisand. The judges were amused and revolted by the sprawling campiness of his reprise of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”
Simon’s plea to the nation: “I pray you do not go through to the next round.” – Tom Gliatto
Tell us: Who did you vote for? Who will make it through to the top 12?
